Today's Alarming Twin Educational Crises

There are twin crises in American Education today. The first is the decline in “American History Literacy Rates,” especially among our children in public schools and our young adults. The second is the decline in “Love of Country” and “Patriotism.”

There is a direct correlation between the two issues, because a citizen that is ignorant of their nation’s past cannot fully appreciate the amazing legacy of Freedom they inherited at birth, or by their parent’s choice to bring them to America and make them an American citizen.

That legacy, including the “Gift of Freedom,” and the many opportunities that come with that freedom, were provided by the many past generations of American Patriots who paid for them with their selfless sacrifices of blood, sweat, and treasure.

If you don’t believe these twin crises are real, listen to one of America’s (and my) favorite and most read and beloved historians, David McCullough, who said:

I think we are raising a generation of young Americans who are, to a very large degree, historically illiterate.

Crisis One: Declining American History Education & Literacy Rates

Our public schools are increasingly abandoning teaching the traditional core subjects of American History and Civics in favor of teaching more politically correct courses and curriculums. The result is the decline of knowledgeable American citizens and less respect and love for our country.

Only 13 percent of eighth graders were proficient in an understanding of U.S. History. In comparison, 1 percent were advanced, 53 percent basic, and 29 percent below basic,” according to the 2022 “Nation’s Report Card.”

Only 31 percent answered “the government should be a democracy, when asked to choose a common belief among the people of the United States.”

According to a 2014 study by the Annenberg Public Policy Center; “[only]a third of respondents (36 percent) could name all three branches of the U.S. government

less than one-quarter of America’s students (23%) were proficient in Civics.

Crisis Two: Declining Patriotism and Love of Country

Following are a few facts about the correlation between declining American History Literacy rates and declining Love of Country and Patriotism:

Only 63% of U.S. adults say they are either “very proud” or “extremely proud” to be an American,” according to a Gallup poll.

That same Gallup poll found that “only 40% of respondents between 18 and 34 years of age, claim to be either “very proud” or “extremely proud” to be an American.
