About the Author

Hi, I’m writer Walter Franklin Davis (“Frank” to my family and friends!), and I have a passion for four things:

Writing, History, Flags, and America

In the upcoming “Flags of Freedom Trilogy,” a series of American History, Civics, and Flag History books; I’ve combined all four passions into a single project in an effort to give something back to the country that has done so much for me. Over my seven and a half decades of life, I’ve received so much from my country, and without it expecting much from me in return other than making a small monetary contribution each year (taxes), voting, and by generally just behaving myself! Well, most of the time, anyway! (However, at my stage of life, the latter is unfortunately, far too easy to accomplish!)

The Crises in American History & Civics Education

All kidding aside, in 2022, when I began researching and writing what would eventually become this three-book series, I was only planning on writing a single book about America’s many historic flags. (After all, I was born on “Flag Day!”) But the more that I researched and learned, the deeper my interest became, and the ideas began to flood my creative synapses. The trigger that sparked this project was when I discovered the dismal state of our young American’s knowledge (or lack thereof), of American History and Civics. Subjects that they are not being taught in many classrooms, in the media, or online.

As an example, using statistics from NAEP in 2022, I found that 8th-grade student’s knowledge of American History continued its decades-long decline, with only 13% testing as “proficient” in those subjects. That means that the majority of our children are flunking these important subjects! In fact, most young Americans educated in our public schools today cannot name the three branches of our government. That’s not only sad, it’s dangerous!

It was information like this that transitioned my simple flag book from being just another writing project that caught my imagination, to an educational campaign to try and do something for young Americans, and my country. while I still have the time and health to “Give-Back” to the country that’s done so much for me and my family. So, I created “The Flags of Freedom American History Project,” as an apolitical, independently-funded, educational outreach initiative to help parents, grand-parents, and schools teach young Americans about the epic adventure story of “How America Became America.”

Crises like these do not bode well for the future of our country, but we can’t leave it to our public schools alone, to our government or to “someone else,” to do something about it. We must take responsibility for these problems ourselves. That’s why I’ve taken the first step toward accomplishing the goals of the Project by writing unique, narrative-nonfiction books that will help make learning American history more Entertaining, Engaging, Fun, and Educational for young Americans (of any age), but especially for those in Middle-School and High-School. We need to start teaching our children early in life about their nation’s past, and about all of the good things that America stands for, so they might not only develop their knowledge of our country’s history, but also a greater “Love of Country,” another crisis among our youth that is also in steep decline.

Project Status & Action Plan

After over two years of constant 7-days-a-week work on writing this labor-of-love, the manuscript is well over 100,000 words currently (more probably like 200,000+ in total), and over 400 pages in the first edition of this planned three book series. I’m happy to report that the manuscript of the initial book in the series, “Flags of Freedom-The Quest for Freedom,” is now basically finished. I’m now preparing to send it to my editor, and then to my book designer to layout and format it in preparation for its printing and final release on Flag Day, June 14th, of this year.

I’m sharing these details with you because I want you to know just how much effort I’ve invested into the four passions that I mentioned earlier, so that you can gauge the extent of my commitment to this project. These books are, however, not just a way for me to earn a living (although I hope to be monetarily rewarded some where down the line for the massive number of hours I’ve spent in this chair looking at my monitor and struggling with carpal-tunnel syndrome), because they are about more than just money. They are about the future of the country that you and I will leave as our legacy for the future generations of young Americans who will follow us. But, I can’t do it all on my own.

I need your help, because we can only push back this rising tide of ignorance if we take action.

So, if you believe as I do, that everyday Americans like us must be part of the solution to these educational crises, won’t you please help support my work by investing in the “Flags of Freedom American History Project?”  Together, we can make a difference in creating more informed, engaged, and service-oriented American citizens and future leaders. The result of our efforts will make a stronger America, and a better place to live, love, work, and raise our families.
