“Flags of Freedom – The Quest for Freedom” Summary
The first volume in The Flags of Freedom Trilogy, the “Flags of Freedom-The Quest for Freedom,” begins with the flags of the Thinkers in ancient Athens & Rome, circa 509 B.C., where Democracy and the Republic respectively, were first born, tried, and eventually died. Those failed experiments in finding the best form of government to help achieve the ancient human quest for freedom, would some two millennia later be resurrected to influence a group of 18th century American Thinkers and Philosophers who would take the best ideas from both and improve upon them.
Today, we all know these “18th-century Thinkers” as America’s Founding Fathers. They adopted the best of those ancient ideas about freedom, to model their new and revolutionary ideas about Human Freedom, the roles and responsibilities of Citizenship, Self-Governance, and Representative Self-Government, in devising a new government for the new United States of America.
America’s Founding story then jumps forward in time some 2,000-years, and continues with the Flags of the Discoverers, Explorers, Colonizers, Revolutionaries, and Lawmakers. These flags helped win a war for Freedom and Independence against the greatest military power in the world, Great Britain, creating a new nation on the world stage with its world-shaking founding documents: The Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and The Bill of Rights. With these brilliant documents, the human “Quest for Freedom” that began over 2,500 years ago, was finally achieved!
While this chapter of the Quest for Freedom story comes to a close at the end of the 18th century, when in 1795, two new states were added to the original thirteen, and two new stars were added to our national flag and symbol of Freedom, the “Stars and Stripes.”
There are, of course, many more flags and many more flag stories to come in the epic story of “How America Became America.” So, stay tuned for the next volume in the “Flags of Freedom Trilogy,” entitled, “The Rise, Fall & Rebirth of Freedom!“
